in the guanabara bay, praia de galeão received its name from a large ship built on ilha de governador in the seventeenth century. a shipyard was established on the guanabara bay, where the waters were much calmer than those of the south zone beaches. the ship was called the 'galeão padre eterno' or the galleon of the eternal father and was the largest ship ever built at the time.
