in 1946 many of the beaches of
ilha do governador became restricted areas for the use of the
navy or the brazilian air force.
while this affected the local
tourism at the time, these beaches are today the most well
preserved on the island.
some are accessible via
special permit, mostly for research purposes, since in any case
the water quality is usually too low to be of touristic
interest.
