in the 18th century, the great farms started to become smaller
but it would be in the beginning of the 19th century, with the
arrival of the portuguese royal family, that the whole region
would start to deeply transform.
in the 20th century the area went through a major
development of the local industrial infrastructure - to allow
for the expansion of the population, and for the construction of
factories and access routes, large embankment projects were
initiated to cover the wide mangroves existing along the coasts
of
guanabara bay.
