in september 2013, red bull hosted its 5th worldwide cliff diving championship at icaraí beach, simultaneously making niterói the first latin american city to host the contest.

participants practiced and later competed from a three-tiered structure inspired by the infamous diving platform that existed here in the mid-twentieth century.

constructed in 1936, and designed to replicate a bird with its wings spread, the platform was a focal point for swimmers from all over and a principal attraction in niterói at the time.

after sustaining structural damage from storms, it was demolished in the 1960s in the name of public safety.
