the mountains on either side, aside from the two mentioned earlier, alto mourão and pedra do elefante sit just to the northeast, draw many hikers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts.

families and couples also find much to love about itacoatiara, as it is dotted with excellent pousadas and bed and breakfasts, the western corner has a little 'prainha' that is completely protected from the waves and thus excellent for children and, most importantly, making it a calm beach. 

until the 1990s, the majority of residences here were the summer homes of the elite.
