january 25th marks tom jobim day - antônio carlos brasileiro de almeida jobim, also known as tom jobim or antônio carlos jobim, was a bossa nova carioca singer and composer most famous internationally for the song 'garota de ipanema' (girl from ipanema) - as of 2014 a life-size bronze statue of the artist became an instant landmark on the boardwalk by arpoador beach. 

the last two weeks of january are dedicated to the  rio jazz festival - an event with huge crowd pull and appeal, amounting to an approximate 25.000 people audience in the last edition.

Three days filled with jam sessions, intense guitar solos, deep, earthy voices and all the passion and poise that could be expected from a jazz festival occurring in the carioca center.
