Masses in memory of the deceased originated in the fourth century, but it was only the fifth century that the church dedicated a special day to this celebration.

this date was chosen to follow the day of All Saints, November 1, c elebrating the remembrance of all roman catholic saints  - as the religious believe that all people, even if not canonized, enter a state of grace after death. 

on a lighter side, Since 2007 on november 2nd a growing number of 'dead-walkers' take over the beautiful coast of Copacabana on the Zombie Walk - With hundreds of participants in last year's edition, it is safe to say that this is one new tradition that has come to stay - an instant classic.
