The lagoon is currently undergoing a major environmental protection program, restoring the lakes by removing waste, as well as constructing new land and planting fauna and forestry - The Centre for Environmental Education offers guided tours of the trails, art and recycling workshops, exhibitions and video workshops, for those with a keen eye for historical and environmental themes.

Marapendi offers visitors a powerful union of water and land, as well as mangroves and salt-marshes, as well as an abundance of fascinating and obscure plant species that live amongst the fauna, such as those with more than one stem, or which breathe through their roots.
