The Archipelago Cagarras, or 'Cagarras Islands', are a set of seven islands and rock formations located just off the coast of Rio, close to Ipanema beach - These islands offer an alternative view of Rio, detached as they are from the main stretches of land, and can be an excellent way to view the city in a new light. They are an ideal spot for bird-watching, where species such as seagulls, boobies, hawks, owls, herons and vultures can be found amongst the fig trees and orchids - Traversing the craggy rocks and land are also rats, snakes and lizards and in the water lie a vast array of fish, and lucky visitors commonly catch glimpses of turtles, dolphins and whales. Of the seven islands that stud the water surrounding Rio's coast, Ilha Palmas is the lushest, named as it is because of the abundance of fauna and the dense growth of Palm trees - Ilha Comprida, or 'Trouser Island', is the most popular as it boasts a long stretch of tranquil beaches. |
