The guide, a collaboration between author Ines Garçoni, researcher and film director Sergio Block and photographer Marcos Pinto, is the result of visiting nearly 100 establishments to identify the very best options for eating and drinking in the favelas - The list includes standard restaurants along with bars, makeshift vendor stands and walking peddlers of homemade snacks, presenting the best whether operated by career chefs or everyday people just trying to make a living. Published in 2013, the guide shines a light on gastronomic delicacies of Rio which were once inaccessible due to the dangerous and unregulated nature of the neighborhoods in which they are located. With the arrival of the UPP in many of Rio's favela communities in 2008, the neighborhoods began to reach a state of order that allowed establishments to be safely accessed by a steady flow of desirable clientele - highlighting the successful revitalization and social restructuring of communities once controlled by violent criminals. | one day in rio | |||
