In the early hours of the morning, as Rio begins to stir for the coming day, newsstand workers can be seen gathering newspapers and magazines and stacking them for keen and inquisitive residents of the city. There is however, a little carioca twist - in many locations across town, pages of some periodicals are individually hung so that even the poorest of the city's residents can benefit from the information nestled in their lines. In the afternoon, on lunch and coffee breaks, men and women often gather around these hubs, pouring over the pages, discussing their contents and generally turning their consumption into a social and communal activity, or a discussion forum. |
