at a glance
the brazilian television system was inaugurated in 1950 by francisco de assis chateaubriand bandeira de melo, best known as 'chatô'.

he was not born rich or noble (in fact he only learned how to read when he was 9 years old), however that did not come in the way of him forming the basis for a modern brazilian press and mass culture.

chatô founded: 18 television stations, 34 newspapers, 36 radio stations, 1 news agency, 1 monthly magazine, 1 weekly magazine, as well as some magazines for children.

he became the 'king of brazil'. he was feared and known for being controversial and having strong ties to the current leaders within both politics and economy, he was the brazilian 'citizen kane'. arrow-back     arrow-forward
