published by the Instituto Pereira Passos, Praias Cariocas (Carioca Beaches) by Claudio Novaes examines how the coastal environment has shaped the culture and character of the city of Rio and its inhabitants. Beach culture took root in the late 19th Century, influenced in part by a widely held belief that sea-bathing and coastal air had strong health benefits. Beyond this, the sandy beaches themselves offer innumerable opportunities for sporting recreations, relaxing with friends, romantic dates, meditation, reflection, reading and basking in the sunshine. Cariocas are endlessly proud of their beaches - it is here they are able to connect with nature, and it is here also that social boundaries and divisions are broken down. | one day in rio | |||
