the office operates all the environmental licensing and pollution monitoring in the region - the smAC is located with the headquarters of rio de Janeiro's City Hall and looks after and maintains no more than 18 city parks, three environmental education centers, and a selection of community gardens, orchards, reforestation areas, and cycle paths.

smAC is run by four regional managers who maintain rio de Janeiro's Environmental patrol program from their respective regions - the program is designed to protect the land and raise awareness of local issues.
