while the 1959 orfeu negro could be said to have glossed over brazil's societal problems this film directly engages with them and attempts to show a more genuine view of favela life. the success of this adjustment can be seen in the fact that while the original film received most of its acclaim outside of brazil, orfeu became a box office success both within brazil and outside. the documentary seu jorge: the south bank show (2006) tells the remarkable story of carioca seu jorge's rise from street kid to international actor and pop star, filmed on location in his native rio de janeiro. in the film, we see seu jorge's inspiring passage from the slums of gogo da ema, one of rio's most dangerous favelas, to international stardom following appearances in roles in the internationally acclaimed city of god and in wes anderson's film the life aquatic with steve zissou. |
