the oscar nominated animated film uma história de amor e fúria (rio 2096: a story of love and fury) (2103) narrates the tale of an indian warrior and the woman he loves janaína over 600 years.

the animation follows the two characters through six centuries and four significant periods of brazilian history, the arrival and colonization of the portuguese in the early 16th century, slavery in the 1800s, the military regime at its height in the 1970s and the war for water in rio de janeiro, set in 2096.

throughout these periods in history janaína and her immortal hero go through numerous different incarnations, the warrior becoming a bird when he dies, only to fly to find janaina again in a new time and place.

director luiz bolognesi researched heavily into brazilian history in order to find the appropriate periods upon which to base the animation - in the first time period we meet the warrior as a tupinambá indian called abeguar who is fighting in the indian wars against the portuguese colonizers.
