at a glance

Huge amounts of capital circulated around the development of the train line in the final decades of the 19th Century - train companies began to play a role of fundamental importance in shaping the city, forming alliances with foreign investors, and those in command of real estate, land and state capital.

Methods of transport were highly socially stratified - the rich almost exclusively used trams on their trips to the south of the city, while the poor had reign of the trains which attended the suburbs.

The extension of train lines to the suburbs provided significant job opportunities in construction - The train line expansion effort was not satisfactorily comprehensive to meet the transport necessities of the greatly expanded public, meaning that people had to find a way to live closer to their workplace.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
