In his five years in government 27 favelas were removed and 42,000 people were transferred across the city and placed in constructed residential areas such as Cidade de Deus (city of god).

in 1964 the country witnessed a military coup aided and supported by wealthy and some religious sectors of the civil society - The coup, in replacing populism, concentrated wealth in the hands of privileged groups and power in the hands of the military.

with the installment of the dictatorial regime, affluent areas began expanding out to the West of the city, towards săo conrado and barra da tijuca - The State, in conjunction with private capital, invested huge amounts in the expansion of this region of the city, opening streets and roads and instating vast infrastructure.                 arrow-back      arrow-forward
