at a glance

By 2011, many of the favelas in the 'belt' surrounding the North and South Zones of the city had been occupied, including Rocinha and Vidigal.

In conjunction with increased state funding and programs, social organizations have expanded their focus and remit - Programs like Solos Culturais (Cultural Soils) promoted cultural intervention, consumption and production in favelas. The name of the project derived from the idea that Rio's favelas are fertile and fruitful ground for artistic and enriching practices.

A number of cultural centers have opened in recent years as centers for community leisure, working to combat obstacles to education, culture and income, and strengthen local identity -  highly interactive and creative spaces where music, song, art and storytelling abound.    arrow-back      arrow-forward
