on the westward edge of the tijuca lagoon is
a small set of inhabited islands, considered part of the wider
lagoon complex.
these islands are placed just behind the
joatinga canal, and right between the renowned
barra da tijuca neighborhood, which these islands are considered part of, and
the
itanhangá neighborhood, which occupies the hills to the
east.
these islands were created artificially when
efforts were developed in order to improve the drainage of the
lagoons in the barra da tijuca region, which at the time
suffered greatly with water stagnation and pollution.
