in the eastern edge of the tijuca lagoon, an
area separating
barra da tijuca, situated to the west,
from the
itanhangá
neighborhood, one can find a small archipelago.
connected to each other by a bridge, the islands of the marina and
the tiny ilha do amílcar are those located more to the south,
just shy of the 'ponte nova', or 'new bridge', that crosses the canal.
being
artificial islands, they were created using the sediments
remaining after the excavations made to improve the drainage of
the barra da tijuca's lagoons, to resolve
problems resulting from water stagnation and pollution.
