at a glance

by the late 50's, a distinct new music scene based on this mixture of rhythms was starting to take shape in rio de janeiro, and began being the main feature in local college concerts - in an allusion to the fusion between samba and jazz, these concerts gained the name of 'samba sessions'.

one of these concerts featured a group called bossa nova, with 'bossa' being an offshoot word for 'samba' in rio slang and 'nova' meaning 'new', in other words 'new samba'.

over time, these concerts caught the attention of some emerging and mainstream musical artists, who were attracted by this new style of melodic expression so popular with both the young and the mature public.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
