at a glance

along with jazz, elements from musical impressionism by the french composers claude debussy and joseph-maurice ravel were soon added - the genre started to develop around voice, piano, and guitar, and bossa nova was born.

in 1958, an album by brazilian violinist joão gilberto was released and incorporated two tracks that many believe consecrated bossa nova in the musical lexicon, bim bom, by joão gilberto, and chega de saudade by vinícius de moraes and tom jobim.

vinícius de moraes and tom jobim became two of the greatest composers of bossa nova - the album wasn't an immediate success, but notably it was released in the early days of the presidency of juscelino kubitschek.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
