at a glance
carioca chiquinha gonzaga  was the first choro pianist, composer in 1897 of carta-jaca, to this day one of the most important contributions to the genre - other famous carioca choro players include pixinguinha, ernesto nazareth, and  waldir azevedo.

the first reference to an organizer of choro concerts is tojoaquim antônio da silva calado.  calado was a skilled musician who played the flute in these concerts, and was also able to gather some of the best musicians of the area - because band members in a choro band came from different musical backgrounds, improvisation was a key skill for any choro player just as it is was in jazz music.      arrow-back      arrow-forward
