at a glance
inevitably, choro spread to other major brazilian cities but until today, rio de janeiro is considered the undisputed capital of choro - the advent of silent cinema saw the the first professional choro bands, as choro was the music of choice to be played at the movies in brazil.

just like with jazz music, choro's popularity suffered a decline in mid twentieth century, yet, in rio de janeiro choro still had a strong following, kept alive by artists such as paulinho da viola, paulo moura, isaías, hamilton de holanda, hélio delmiro, turíbio santos, as well as the bands época de ouro, água da moringa, trio madeira brasil, premê, and galo preto.

choro is normally played in bars and clubs where samba is played - we have a section offering information about some of the best events and places  to enjoy choro in rio de janeiro, on any night of the week.arrow-back      arrow-forward
