at a glance

during the nineties, funk carioca was the ruling genre, massively mediatized with hits coming out almost non-stop played on radio stations in a viral way.

the afro beat and portuguese lyrics with relatable themes made funk to have more of an appeal to cariocas rather than the foreign sound, which at the time was not as accessible or understandable, seeing as at the time the internet was not as available and many were not fluent enough to understand in full the international songs.

however, the idea and unique rhythm of hip-hop was intriguing to the afro brazilian community, and with time, it became a fresh way to express in a poetic manner the various social-economic issues many residents were facing, such as restricted education access, crime, and unemployment.  arrow-back       arrow-forward
