the settlement was once divided into two distinct areas: andaraí grande (big) was the older section and included andaraí proper, vila isabel, grajaú and aldeia campista - by the nineteenth century the name andaraí grande and the areas of vila isabel, grajaú and aldeia campista within it became bairros in their own right.

andaraí pequeno (small) is the newer part and includes tijuca - the first textile factory in rio de janeiro: factory são pedro de alcântara cotton fabrics was established here.

the hospital militar do andarahy grande (big andarahy military hospital), home of the batalhão zenóbio da costa: 1º batalhão da polícia do exército (battalion zenobio coast: 1st battalion of military police) is also located here - the iguatemi mall near the neighborhood of vila isabel was built in 1996.

andaraí is also home to the estádio do américa futebol club (america football club stadium).
