at a glance

acari is a neighborhood located in the north zone (zona norte) of rio. the bairro (neighborhood) is bordered by parque colúmbia, jardim américa, coelho neto, irajá, and pavuna. the bairro of acari is a developing neighborhood. the name comes from the indigenous tupi people's language, it means water discus, a local fish species.

the once rural community near the rio acari (acari river) consisted of mostly sugarcane plantations. in the mid nineteenth century, the railroad stimulated the area's population growth. with the railroad came the development of small urban centers. many of these expanded with new subdivisions. one of them, villa nazareth (nazareth village) was built in the 1930s between the avenida automóvel clube (automobile club avenue) and rua acurui (acurui street). arrow-back      arrow-forward
