acari was established as a rio neighborhood in 1940, and later in 1946, the construction of avenida brasil (brazil avenue) attracted business and played a role in increasing the neighborhood's population - newer residential areas were constructed in the 1970s such as the fazenda botafogo (botafogo farm) which was modeled on the city of god (city of god) in a neighborhood in the west zone.

the metrô line 2 station acari - fazenda botafogo was built, as well as, the municipal hospital ronaldo gazolla (hospital municipal ronaldo gazolla), the second largest hospital in the country, more commonly referred to as 'acari hospital' - the neighborhood remains one of rio de janeiro's poorest with the highest poverty rate in the state.
