at a glance

bento ribeiro is a neighborhood located in the north zone (zona norte) of rio. the bairro (neighborhood) is bordered by turiaçu, honório gurgel, oswaldo cruz, rocha miranda, and marechal hermes. the neighborhood's name commemorates the birthplace of bento manuel ribeiro carneiro monteiro, who was the mayor of rio de janeiro between 1910 and 1914.

develoment of the area began near the streets rua joão vicente and rua carolina machado and was further supported by efforts by the emperor of brazil, dom pedro ii (peter ii) to expand the brazil central railroad. the resulting rail station, now defunct, was the estação prefeito bento ribeiro (mayor bento ribeiro station), named after former general bento (benedict) manuel carneiro ribeiro monteiro and rio between 1910 and 1914. arrow-back      arrow-forward
