at a glance

cachambi is a neighborhood located in the north zone (zona norte) of rio. nearby bairros (neighborhoods) bordering it are méier, eng. novo and jacaré; jacarezinho, maria da graça and del castilho, inhaúmaa, eng. de dentro and todos os santoss.

the name cachambi derives from the tupi language of the indigenous people of the area, it is thought to translate into wooden or grassy slope. since the area was originally large tracts of grasslands, the name seems fitting.

early in its history, two of the area's portuguese settlers manuel cardoso da silva and manuel brandão took the land for their enterprise and sold the rest to others. the grassland had potential for cattle farming and  attracted settlements of travellers, commonly referred to as 'gypsies', who set up their encampments here.
