Cidade Universitária is located on ilha do Fundão, which is situated next to the ilha do governador, east of complexo da maré and north of caju.

Before the middle of the 20th century the Inhaúma cove was comprised of eight scattered islands which peeked over the surface of guanabara bay. They were called Cabras, Pindaí de Ferreira, Pindaí do França, Baiacu, Fundão, Catalão, Bom Jesus and Sapucaia.

These islands were eventually united by a huge embankment on which the Cidade Universitária, or 'Academic City', of Rio de Janeiro is now situated. It was a massive undertaking, which was first proposed in 1935, with the aim of constructing a single space to bring together a variety of functions and sectors of the Federal University.
