The neighborhood of coelho neto is located on the northern edge of the north zone of rio de janeiro. it borders the neighborhoods of costa barros to the north, barros filho, honório gurgell and rocha mirandaa to the west,  colégio to the south, and irajáá and  acarito the east. It was once called 'Areal', or 'sandstrip', when the lands were owned by the Amaral family.

nowadays, the mostly resedential neighborhood is cut through by three major traffic arteries: Avenida Brasil, Avenida Pastor Martin Luther King Jr., and Avenida dos Italianos, which provide significant access routes to the northern regions of the metropolitan area of the city.
