at a glance

complexo do manguinhos, or just manguinhos, is a neighborhood located in the north zone (zona norte) of rio. the bairro (neighborhood) is bordered by bonsucesso, higienópolis and jacarezinho; jacaré, benfica, caju and complexo da maré. the neighborhood was once a large flooded area, hence the name, which comes from the portuguese word for mangrove - manguinho.

there were many mangroves in the area between caju and the beach at praia pequena de benfica (litthle beach of benfica). they continued on to the old saco de inhaúma area in baía de guanabara (guanabara bay) and ilha do pinheiro (pine island) and ilha do bom jardim (island of the good garden).
