at a glance

in the bairro, there is the morro do amorim (amorin hill) named for joão amorim dias who owned a charcoal operation. in 1900, the barão pedro afonso (baron pedro afonso) created the instituto soroterápico federal (federal institute of serum therapy) to manufacture a vaccine for the bubonic plague.

the facility was later renamed the instituto de patologia experimental de manguinhos (institute of experimental pathology of manguinhos). it was, under its director oswaldo cruz, leading the fight against the yellow fever epidemic.
