a neo-morrish monument, designed by the portuguese architect luís morais honoring doctor cruz was built and the institute's name was changed to the instituto oswaldo cruz now the fundação oswaldo cruz but more commonly referred to as fiocruz. it is considered to be a very important brazilian institution for teaching and healthcare research.

the neighborhood is home to the manguinhos refinaria (manguinhos refinery) now, the refinaria de petróleos de manguinhos (petroleum refinery of manguinhos). furthermore, there is the parque joão goulart (goulart park), the parque carlos chagas (carlos chagas park), also known as parque varginha (1941) and the mandela de pedra (mandela stone).
