at a glance

cascadura is a neighborhood located in the north zone (zona norte), one of rio de janeiro three zones. the bairro (neighborhood) borders the communities of campinho, quintino bocaiúva, praça seca, cavalcanti and engenheiro leal.

curiously, the name translates to 'thick skin' or 'hard shell' - at least three versions of the origins of the neighborhood's name are circulating.

the first story involves an english woman by the name of mary (maria) graham. she spoke of a trip she took to the fazenda real de santa cruz (royal treasury of the holy cross) in 1824. it was, as she described, a casca d'ouro or, a shell of gold in portuguese.
