at a glance

quintino bocaiúva is a neighborhood located in the zona norte (noth zone), one of rio de janeiro three zones. the bairro (neighborhood) is bordered by cascadura, cavalcanti, piedade, tanque and praça seca.

the bairro's name commemorates quintino bocaiúva - one of the leaders who helped to create the brazilian republic in 1889. he was born quintino antónio ferreira de sousa but he adopted the surname bocaiuva, the name of a native palm species, to show his affection for his (new) country - the republic of brazil.

the quintino neighborhood as it is commonly called, is split by the central do brasil (central railway of brazil) creating its north and south sections, which are quite similar. both contain residential and commercial areas. however, the smaller southern section is known more widely. the north section, on the other hand is not only larger, it is also more populated. the area once was a part of the freguesia de inhaúma (inhaúma parish). arrow-back      arrow-forward
