at a glance

the neighborhood of ramos is located in zona norte, the north zone of rio de janeiro - it is enveloped by olaria and complexo do alemão to the west, and bonsucesso and complexo da maré to the south, avenida brasil runs along the east side, separating the neighborhood from guanabara bay.

neighborhood was once part of the Fazenda do Engenho da Pedra, or 'Stone Mill Farm', which was part of the Inhaúma region - In the 17th century, the roads of Velha do Engenho da Pedra (Old Stone Mill) and Nova do Engenho da Pedra (New Stone Mill) were built connecting the ranch to the coast and facilitating the movement and influx of people and goods.

These roads terminated at the Cais de Pedra, or 'Stone Pier', a huge rock next to where today Piscinão de Ramos (Big Swimming Pool of Ramos) is located - Following colonization the land was predominantly used for sugar mills, pottery production and agriculture, and later the land was adapted for the cultivation of coffee. arrow-back      arrow-forward
