at a glance

In the 19th Century the vast farm property was taken over by Leonor Mascaranhas de Oliveira. Being single, in her will she left thirteen parcels of the allotment to relatives and friends, one of which was bestowed to Doctor João Torquatos de Oliveira, a graduate in medicine and son of a slave. In 1870 his widow sold parts of the allotment to Captain Luiz Ramos, after which the neighborhood would eventually be named.

By the end of the 19th century the railroad arrived in the region and a train station was built on land owned by the captain's heirs. It was at this time that the first residential areas of the region were built.

The region around Ramos station had become quite prosperous, and was one of the primary locals for wealthier people in the Leopoldinean area. Hence, the Social Ramos Clube, or 'Ramos Social Club', was formed in the early 20th century, among a number of other elite establishments. arrow-back      arrow-forward
