In the early 20th Century an urbanization project was led by the engineer, Joaquim Vieira Ferreira Sobrinho, and several of the public parks retain the names of his relatives - The century brought a number of other developments to the region, including the first samba parades and, eventually, the creation of the famous Imperatriz Leopoldinense samba school, which is today eight times winner of the Rio carnival.

Famous and esteemed names in Brazilian music have formed strong ties with the neighborhood as a result of these schools, amongst them the samba singers and songwriters, Zeca Pagodinho and Almir Guineto - The saxophonist and composer, Pixinguinha, also composed the Ramos Anthem in 1965 to commemorate the region's 80th year of existence.

the neighborhood estends to the east to the shores of guanabara bay, surrounded by Piscinão de Ramos, which was constructed in the early 2000s to replace the beach which was suffering from dangerous levels of pollution. The 'Big Swimming Pool' is a complex with a manmade beach and saltwater pool, and is one of the great attractions of the neighborhood, teeming with bathers on warm days throughout the year.
