at a glance

the proletário do dique is a large favela community located in the northern tip of north zone of rio de janeiro. while the neighborhood of jardim américa was a planned urbanization, built in the 1950s and with relatively good infrastructures, the associated favelas that emerged along the shores of the meriti river, were built over the wet grounds just shy of the mangrove.

the unsanctioned line of hastily-made housing mostly follows two roads - dique street to the north and to the south renascer avenue, along the border to the neighborhood of jardim américa.

albeit usually described as being part of the jardim américa neighborhood, the favela actually covers a much wider area, entering into the nearby vigário geral neighborhood and extending all the way to the water treatment station on the eastern side.
