at a glance

one of their original encampments, arraial do cachambi (camp cachambi) may have been the birthplace of the neighborhood. it was operated for two decades a by lucídio josé candido pereira do lago - a street in the nearby bairro of méier is named after him.

by the late eighteen-hundreds, a new trolley company was established by the companhia ferro-carril de cachambi (ferro carril company of cachambi). these donkey-drawn streetcars were the area's first transportation line helping to establish the bairro, and others, such as maria da graça and del castilho.

a potential point of interest in the neighborhood is the igreja de nossa senhora da aparecida (church of our lady of apparition), which was erected in 1901.

today, cachambi remains a thriving and growing neighborhood of rio. the norte shopping (north mall) opened in 1986. large residential complexes and the expansion of norte shopping continue to enhance this vibrant neighborhood.
