at a glance

as more portuguese traders settled in the port, and the slave trade established itself in the area, housing was built along morro de pinto (pinto's hil, and the street of america, a busier area of santo cristo that now offers art exhibits and vibrant night life.

during the second half of the 19th century, several areas were embanked in order to house more residences and make space for roads connecting to the zona sul (south zone). this led to the occupation of the pinto's hill on the eastern side of the neighborhood, where many houses were built by migrant workers.

around the same time as the settlement of the hill, the saint christ of miracles church was built a little further north, now enveloped by the  praça santo cristo which has become one of the most significant historical areas in the neighborhood.
