at a glance

the northern area of the neighborhood only came into existence in the early 20th century, when the coast was artificially extended into the bay to create the port district. this development destroyed the melons and moças islands - the area is now mostly occupied by buildings related with the harbor's activities and administration.

the saint christ street (rua santo cristo) remains one of the main avenues inside the neighborhood, lively with traffic and activities. in the buildings surrounding this street it is possible to find some of the best gastronomic establishments of santo cristo - suchs as the pedro alves and the tâmega restaurants.

parts of the region once belonged to the landlord alferes diogo de pina, and  several locales in the area are named after são diogo, including like the entire southern section, just beside the railroad. arrow-back      arrow-forward
