the demographic of the community is mosly made up of low-income households. recent investment  and development of the area have caused real estate prices to rise, igniting new interest in the neighborhood and initiating a process of rejuvenation and change.

traditionally, residents of santo cristo much enjoy carnival culture - the neighborhood is the cradle of the famous samba school gres alegria and lies in close proximity to cidade do samba (samba city) aone of rio's most important landmarks - the sambadrome (sambódromo).

located on marquês de sapucaí street, the sambadrome was constructed in 1984 and is the location of the all important, official  parade of the samba schools, annually for the rio carnival. the sambódromo, is a special stadium built specifically to host this event. up until 1983, the bleachers were assembled and disassembled on each side of rua marques de sapucaí each year at carnival time. arrow-back      arrow-forward
