Presented by the  Instituto Brasileiro de Análises Sociais e Econômicas, the study Quando memória e história se entrelaçam - A trama dos espaços na grande Tijuca (When memory and history intertwine- plotting the spaces of Greater Tijuca), by Alexandre Mello Santos, Márcia Pereira Leite e Nahyda Franca, provides some of the results of the project, ' História dos bairros e comunidades da Grande Tijuca' (The history of the neighborhoods and communities of Greater Tijuca), carried out through extensive studies by Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro State University)   (UERJ), by Rede de Observadores (Network of Urban Observers) (from the Department of Geography) and by Núcleo de Antropologia e Imagem (Team of Anthropology and Image) (from the Department of Social Sciences).

 It forms part of the project, 'Centro de memória da Grande Tijuca' (The Memory Centre of Greater Tijuca), developed by the Agenda Social Rio with support from Novib. Greater Tijuca is comprised of the neighborhoods of Tijuca, Praça da Bandeira, Alto da Boa Vista, Grajaú, Andaraí, Vila Isabel and Maracanã, and is home to 366,567 residents. Out of these people, approximately 13%  live in the region's 29 favelas.
