curiously enough, the local inhabitants never stopped calling the location 'largo do machado', making any changes in the naming conventions moot. nowadays the square is still placed right besides the laranjeiras road, with the impressive church still dominating the area. it also harbors the state school Colégio Estadual Amaro Cavalcanti, another impressive piece of 19th century architecture. furthermore, the square is home to several important commercial establishments, including the large são luiz cinema theater, and remains one of the prime touristic centers of the whole of rio de janeiro. | largo do machado | |||
