sugar cane harvest in brazil started in the early sixteenth century, with the establishment of sugar mills - it was the basis of northeastern brazil economy, the workforce was mainly slaves and indigenous people. 

when crop production switched to coffee, those workers were gradually transferred from the mills to large coffee plantations.
