the cascatinha taunay is one of the largest and most beautiful waterfalls in the tijuca national park. the fall was made notable by the french painter nicholas taunay in 1817 and hence named after him. the trail leading to the fall is abundant in fauna and wildlife typical of the atlantic foresthabitat.

many streams run alongside the paths, as well as curious rock formations and rare species of plant. the hike usually takes about 50 minute each way, requiring a reasonable level of fitness and mobility, although it is not too strenuous or steep. the parts that do rise uphill are easily navigated - cascatinha taunay looms large  at over 30 meters high and the water tumbles with great power. nevertheless, the pool is perfect for bathing and swimming.

after cooling off in the water it is possible for history enthusiasts to visit the nearby mayrink chapel, dating back to the late 19th century, and numerous other hiking trials of all difficulties. the banks trail, gecko trail, path of the mosque, and the trail of souls, are all highly recommended and guaranteed to build up an appetite.
